Head Coach Alex Richardson

Head Coach Alex Richardson brings fifteen years of competitive swimming experience to the Westchase Branch of Tampa Bay Aquatics and believes swimming is a lifetime sport that positively effects swimmers overall athletic and personal development.

Coach Alex began his swimming career in the Tampa Bay area at West Florida Lightning Aquatics in Largo, before moving to the swim club, Patriot Aquatics outside Orlando in Altamonte Springs. As an age group swimmer at Patriot Aquatics, Coach Alex worked under Olympic Gold Medalists Martin Zubero and Fred Tyler and world ranked Triathlete Alec Rusokev. Coach Alex swam for Lake Brantley High School and under Clay Parnell and in high school, he achieved 3A District and Regional titles in 2005 and 2006, and was a State Finalist in 2004.

Coach Alex began coaching at Patriot Aquatics in 2005 as the Age Group 1 Coach. During his time at Patriot Aquatics, he also taught one-one-one and group lessons, was Deck Manager and Head lifeguard and worked as an Adventure Splash Camp Counselor.

In 2008, Coach Alex joined the TBAY Family as an Assistant Coach at the Hunter’s Green Branch before following the team to the Arbor Greene Branch in 2009. At Arbor Greene, Coach Alex worked with all levels of swimmers, coaching for the Developmental, Pre-Competitive, Advanced Pre-Competitive and Junior Competitive teams. Coach Alex also worked as a Swim Lesson Instructor and later as the Swim Lesson Coordinator.

In 2011, Coach Alex started his work with Freedom High School.  At FHS, Coach Alex served for two seasons as the Head Coach for the Boys and Girls Varsity Swim Teams.  In 2012, Coach Alex led the Girls Team to a National Division Western Conference Championship, the Boys team to a 3rd Place finish at the District Championship and 1st Place finish in the Boys 200 Free Relay.  The Boys 200 Free Relay would go on to represent FHS at the State Championship where they finished 15th. 

In 2012, Coach Alex became the Head Coach of the TBAY Tampa Palms Branch where he grew the team from ten swimmers, to over 60 in just six months.  At Tampa Palms Coach Alex helped swimmers earn Age Group Championship Standards.

Coach Alex was given the opportunity to represent Florida Swimming at the 2012 Age Group Southern Zone Championship Meet in Rockwall, Texas where he served as the 11-12 Boys Coach.  The Florida Swimming 11-12 Boys finished 3rd overall, which Florida Swimming finished 2nd at the Zone Meet and 1st in the Open Water Invitational.

In December 2012 Coach Alex took over the Head Coach and Director of Competitive Swimming Role at the Westchase Branch of Tampa Bay Aquatics where he currently coaches all ages of competitive swimming, serving as the TBAY Jr. Coach, Age Group Team Coach, Elite Team Coach and Tri-Swim Coach.  He is also serves as the Director of the Swim Lesson program for the Westchase Community Associaton.  In his time at Westchase, Coach Alex has helped swimmers develop into Florida Age Group and Senior Championship Qualfiers and Florida Age Group Top 10 Swimmers.

Coach Alex attended the University of South Florida where he is pursued a degree in Social Sciences and Leadership Studies. While at USF, Alex was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity where he served as President and Vice President and created the nationally recognized philanthropy and community service event, Lady of the Leges. Since its inception in 2010, this event has raised over $33,000 for the V Foundation for Cancer Research and given over 400 hours of community service towards the Pizzo Elementary Positive Behavior Support Initiative.

In Coach Alex's free time he enjoys relaxing by the pool, watching movies, enjoying music and staying active as well as spending time with his growing family.  Alex has two neices and a third neice expected in early August.  In 2013 his younger sister retired from her swimming career at Florida Atlantic University where she was was a finalist at the Sun Belt Conference in 2012 and 2013.  

Coach Alex believes that hard work, leadership, respect and teamwork are all essential in providing a safe, fun and healthy environment for swimmers of all ages to enhance their aquatic abilities and to achieve their goals and is looking forward to growing one of the best competitive programs in the Tampa Bay Area and across the State of Florida.
